Gray Simpson

Gray Simpson (b. 1975, Liverpool) is a figurative artist based in Margate, UK. He works primarily in oil on linen and panel, alongside works on paper and monotypes. Simpson studied Fine Art at Bradford School of Art, graduating with a BA(Hons) in 1998.

Early work combined life-size figure drawing with diaristic text, candid photography, and video installation. After graduating he took part in and curated group exhibitions across Yorkshire, and in 1998 he won First Prize at The Bradford Open at Cartwright Hall. His practice now focuses on intimate, psychologically charged portrait and figure studies that explore memory, identity, and the passage of time. He has been featured in Portraits for NHS Heroes (Bloomsbury Caravel, 2020), and his work is held in private collections in the UK and internationally.
