Gesso

Gesso is probably one of the most important products we use in our workshop. It is applied to the timber frame profile, and is wiped down and sanded to create a smooth base. It can also be used as a finish in its own right, and can be cracked or combed to create a really beautiful effect. We use gesso on our frames, mounts and slips, either using its natural colour, adding a wash to it, or ageing it to complement an antique frame finish.

Examples of our gesso finish in frame and mirror designs: 

• - Consol mirror finished in gold leaf and cracked gesso. 
• - Drew Doggett Spirit of the Camargue print in a combed gesso frame with mitred corners with a linen mount.
• - Vegetable prints in a sage green frame with an aged cracked gesso mount. 
• - Cracked gesso mirror with wrapped leather and large brass metal clips. 
• - Our Amberley Frame in imitation brass with a cracked gesso inlay. 
• -Samples of our gesso finishes in cracked and combed brass.
